All pregnant women are being offered the seasonal flu job for the first time as cases increase in winter months
Health chiefs are urging vulnerable people in Hackney to get vaccinated against swine flu after an increase in the number of cases.
The advice follows reports that one Stamford Hill resident is seriously ill with the virus.
The seasonal flu jab, which this year includes protection against the H1N1 strain, is being offered to all pregnant women for first time.
It is routinely made available to over 65s and younger people with long term health conditions.
Joint Director of Public Health Dr Lesley Mountford said: “Whilst swine flu is a relatively mild illness for most people, it can be very serious for some, with pregnant women and people with a long-term health condition more at risk of becoming seriously ill.
“If you have flu-like symptoms, it is important that you call your GP if your symptoms persist or get much worse.
“Flu vaccinations are our best defence against the virus.”
The vaccine is available from most Hackney pharmacies and GPs.
