Traditional country fayre in De Beauvoir Town
De Beauvoir youngsters delighted in real-life snail races while their parents congratulated each other on their home-grown marrows at the traditional Flower and Produce Show on Sunday.
Organised by De Beauvoir Gardeners, the annual event with a rural village feel, also saw a pooch competition awarding prizes to the dog with the waggiest tail and the best trick.
Prizes were handed out at the event held outside St Peter’s Church in De Beauvoir Road for flowers, potatoes, courgettes, the biggest marrow and quinces, as well as domestic delights including chocolate cakes and jams.
Green-fingered youngsters were encouraged to create a cartoon character garden, and they day’s youngest entrant - aged four - was proud to get a certificate for the runner beans she grew.
“It’s simple, that’s the things about it, it’s an old fashioned kind of day,” said member Nancy Turnbull, who helped organise the day.
“It brings the community together - people come along and see their neighbours, and the children love it, it’s a good family day.”
The De Beauvoir Gardeners club hold monthly talks on the first Tuesday of the month in the crypt of St Peter’s Church in De Beauvoir Road.
