Bus users have been sharing their memories of a popular route after it was axed.

The 271 bus route between Highgate and Moorgate had been running for more than 60 years before its service stopped on Saturday (February 4).

Many who have used the route over the years took to social media to share their thoughts at the “sad" news.

A post on Reddit titled “Thank you and goodbye, London bus route 271” attracted nearly 100 comments from disappointed bus users.

One user commented: “One of my most-used routes, will be very sad to have it gone.”

Another shared memories of using the route to get to Hampstead Heath in the summer. They said: “Used to use this all the time when I lived in Islington, nothing better then jumping on the 271 on a summer evening after work to go swimming on Hampstead Heath.”

The route has served the Highgate and Islington area since 1960, having replaced trolleybus route 611.

The decision to scrap the 271 was taken after Transport for London (TfL) announced a restructure of some bus routes across the capital where capacity exceeds passenger demand.

TfL said that the changes aimed to simplify the bus network, while “retaining key bus links…and even providing new links between some areas”.

Route 271 will still exist in the form of a night service (N271), running from Moorgate to Highgate and on to North Finchley.

TikTok users also posted videos following the news that the bus route would be scrapped.

One video, jokingly captioned “thank you for never being on time”, and set to the Hannah Montana song ‘I’ll Always Remember You’, showed a commuter taking the bus for the last time.

She said: “The bus I take to work is being cancelled. Today was my last time taking it. RIP 271.”

Another user posted a point of view video – “POV: You went on the 271 bus route on its last day before it gets withdrawn for good” – and said that the route would be “missed dearly”.

@thedtw Thanks TfL for letting me use the very pleasant 271. It will be missed dearly #tfl #londonbus #271busroute #londonbusroutewithdrawn ♬ Peggy’s Theme (Variation of Julia’s Theme from EastEnders) - Simon May

After it was announced in November that most TfL bus routes that were set to be axed had been saved, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “This will mean tough decisions elsewhere, but I am very pleased that the vast majority of bus routes proposed to be cut due to the government’s funding conditions can now be saved."
