Police are investigating a fire which broke out in a tower block under renovation.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the blaze in Beechwood Road, Dalston, just before 9.45pm on Saturday (October 14).

Part of a maisonette on the ground and first floor of the eight-storey building was damaged by fire.

Around 20 people fled the block before emergency services arrived, and one person had to be led to safety by firefighters via an external staircase.

An LFB spokesperson said that there were no reports of any injuries.

They added that one of the brigade's 32 metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower whilst the incident was ongoing.

Firefighters from Islington, Bethnal Green, Stoke Newington, Shoreditch, Holloway and Tottenham stations tackled the blaze, bringing it under control by 10.25pm.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the brigade and Metropolitan Police, LFB said.
