Police who stopped a man on suspicion of drink-driving discovered that he was armed with a loaded gun after he tried to flee through a crowded nightclub.
Scotland Yard said Nathan Ingram, 29, of Ridley Road in Hackney, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Wood Green Crown Court having previously pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm, ammunition and possession of a class A drug.
The Metropolitan Police posted a video of the incident on Instagram which shows the chase into the club and the moment an officer finds the gun, with them heard saying “firearm, firearm”.
Police said officers stopped a black Audi Q2 Sport at around 12.40am on November 29 last year as it sped down Hoxton Street towards Old Street.
The driver, Ingram, failed a breathalyser test, showing he was over the limit.
Ingram ran off from police into Old Street when he was told he was going to be arrested for drink-driving.
He was detained by police after he fled into a nightclub and officers found a loaded Bernardelli 69 self-loading pistol in his rucksack.
The bag also contained a small amount of cocaine.
Detective Sergeant Charlie Leather, who led the investigation, said: “A dangerous weapon has been taken out of the criminals’ hands thanks to a routine traffic stop by eagle-eyed police officers.
“Ingram thought he was quick on his feet – but we were quicker.
“We’re determined to get guns off London’s streets.
“The heavy jail sentence handed to Ingram is a warning to anyone tempted to keep a firearm that they’ll end up spending years behind bars.”
Police said Ingram was sentenced on January 27.
