Jerusalem coming to the Tower Theatre between April and May

Jerusalem, written by Jez Butterworth and first staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 2009, is being revived at the Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington for 11 performances from April 29 to May 9.

The play was described as “the hit that transformed British theatre” and “the greatest British play of the century,” following its debut.

The Tower Theatre will also take the production on tour to the Brighton Open-Air Theatre from June 17 to 20.

Set on St George’s Day in the Wiltshire woods, Jerusalem tells the story of Johnny “Rooster” Byron, a former daredevil and local outlaw who offers stories, sacraments and sanctuary to Flintock’s runaways and misfits. His old caravan sits at the edge of the Wiltshire woods with an eviction notice pinned to its door.

Jonathan Reed, director of the Tower Theatre production, said: "Jerusalem takes a piercing look at the synthetic, modern world we’ve built, and asks us who we are without our myths. It has been a joy to work on such an iconic play, and a privilege to collaborate with such a talented cast and creative team.

"I can’t wait for audiences to experience this production. It is full of wild, raucous energy, as well as a touch of magic and mystery.

"Jerusalem will haunt and beguile you long after you leave the show."

Jonathan Reed is an improviser, writer, and director who has performed improv across London for more than 10 years. He was part of the writing team for the sketch show Vice Captains at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, and its follow-up podcast Vice Captains: How to Life Life in 2021.

Mr Reed directed Seagulls at Tower Theatre in 2023 and is set to direct The Children in 2025 at the same venue.

All opening night tickets for Jerusalem at the Tower Theatre are half price, with standard tickets priced between £10 and £16. Group discounts are also available.
