Some of the UK’s favourite match-day snacks and sauces could leave more than just full stomachs.
Kitchen experts at Prestige are warning that foods and sauces often enjoyed during the World Cup can cause stubborn stains on kitchen worktops if spills aren’t cleaned up quickly, especially when fans are too engrossed in the match to wipe up spills straight away.
Tomato-based sauces, turmeric, beetroot, red wine, and even nacho cheese sauce have been highlighted as some of the worst offenders for leaving lasting marks, particularly on light or porous surfaces.
Olivia Disley, a kitchen expert at Prestige, said: "When there's a big match on, cleaning up spills is often the last thing on people's minds.
"It's easy to leave a plate or sauce sitting while you're celebrating a goal or arguing over a refereeing decision.
"The problem is that some foods begin staining almost immediately, particularly on lighter-coloured or porous worktops.
"Acting quickly can make all the difference."
While classic mess-makers like ketchup and curry are well known for staining power, barbecue sauce is a more surprising addition to the list.
Its combination of tomatoes, spices, sugar and caramel colouring can quickly seep into lighter worktops if left to dry.
Ms Disley said: "BBQ sauce catches a lot of people out because it doesn't look particularly dangerous, but it's packed with ingredients that can stain if they're allowed to sit.
"World Cup gatherings often mean people are grazing throughout the match, so spills can easily go unnoticed until half-time or even the final whistle.
"Using chopping boards, serving dishes and wiping up accidents as soon as they happen is much easier than trying to remove a stain that's had an hour or two to set."
Among the top culprits for potential stains are:
- Curry, especially those containing turmeric.
- Nacho cheese sauce, with its bright orange colouring.
- Barbecue sauce.
- Tomato-based sauces including ketchup and salsa.
- Beetroot salad, due to its natural purple-red juices.
- Buffalo wings coated in paprika, chili, and tomato sauce.
- Red wine.
- Chilli con carne.
- Chocolate brownies, for their oily, hard-to-remove residue.
To help fans avoid kitchen regret, Ms Disley shared some practical tips.
She said: "The quicker you wipe away sauces and drinks, the less chance they have of staining the surface.
"Placing dips, sauces, and drinks on trays helps contain spills before they spread across the worktop.
"Even empty plates can leave behind oily sauces and coloured residue if left sitting.
"If you're preparing wings, burgers, or loaded nachos, use a board or platter rather than placing food directly onto the worktop.
"Natural stone, wood, and some composite surfaces can be more susceptible to staining than others, so always follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance.
"Nobody wants to spend half-time scrubbing the kitchen, but a few seconds spent wiping up a spill can save a lot of frustration later."
She said that a few simple precautions can let fans enjoy the football without worrying about long-lasting stains.
She said: "The World Cup is all about enjoying great food with friends and family.
"With a little care, fans can celebrate every goal without worrying about what it's doing to their kitchen worktops."
With the right preparation, World Cup matches can be enjoyed mess-free, and kitchen worktops can be kept clean, no matter how many goals are scored or snacks consumed.
