An award-winning burger chain with locations across north London has been named the country's happiest place to work.
Black Bear Burger has restaurants in Islington's Exmouth Market and Westfield and outlets in the likes of Camden and Shoreditch Boxparks, and Paddington's Market Halls.
It topped CODE Hospitality’s list of Happiest Places to Work 2026 - celebrating businesses that prioritise team welfare and create positive working environments.
Founded by Stew and Liz Down, the London-based burger chain started life as a stall on Hackney's Broadway Market in 2016 and over a decade has grown to include three restaurants and six food outlets.
Stew Down, co-founder of Black Bear Burger, said: "Winning this award means more to me personally than winning any 'Best Burger' award (of which we have won a few) as it really shows we are doing something great here at Black Bear.
"Measuring success often comes through sales and growth, but winning this award demonstrates that we have a great team and great culture and, when you have that, everything else follows."
Judges praised the business for its "hands-on leadership" and "deeply held belief in its people", noting high staff engagement and a clear support structure.
Now in their third year, the awards recognise hospitality businesses of all sizes that excel in employment practices, welfare, and inclusion.
They aim to champion hospitality as a career for people of all ages and backgrounds, at a time of economic uncertainty.
The list of 2026 winners includes a mix of independent bistros, bakeries, hotels, and national chains with judges considering team size, staff survey scores, engagement levels, and company submissions.
