The Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund are providing cash to spruce up West Hackney Recreation Ground, in the grounds of St Paul’s West Hackney Church in Stoke Newington High Street.

A run-down former burial ground is set for a makeover thanks to £700,000 of lottery funding.

The grant will pay for new seating, planting and restoring gravestones which were moved aside in 1885 when the council took ownership of the site.

The rector, Rev Niall Weir said he was delighted: “I have no doubt that this will not only transform the physical appearance of the recreation ground and St Paul’s Churchyard, but that it will also create a wonderful focus and facility for the people of West Hackney.”

The project is expected to be completed in late 2014.
