An aspiring neurosurgeon, a wannabe computer game designer and a future artist were among the BSix College students celebrating this morning.

There was dancing, screaming and some tears at the Kenninghall Road college on A-level results morning.

The Gazette was there, and so too were mayor Phil Glanville and Hackney actor Adam Deacon, who spoke to students about his own journey.

One of the youngsters celebrating was Ernestina Hansen, who only arrived in London from Ghana two years ago.

The 20-year-old has had a difficult year and had to miss a lot of classes while her mother was in hospital, but had some great news for her after picking up an A* in sociology, a B in economics and a B in business.

“I was really surprised,” Ernestina told the Gazette. “I thought I was going to get a B in sociology and a C in business.

“My mum will be really proud when I tell her, but she’s still sleeping at the moment. She was in hospital and I had to stay out of school for quite a while.

“I have got a place at York studying business management but I’m thinking about applying for UCL so I can stay in London.”

Ernestina said the teachers at BSix helped her massively during her fragmented year.

“I got a lot of support,” she continued. “I could go to the teachers on any day with questions and most of the essays I wrote out of class. I would stay in the library until 6pm or 7pm and it was great, there was a lot of materials for me to use.”

Another star student celebrating was Sedra Alsoufi, also 20, who scooped an A* in Arabic, A in biology and two Bs in maths and chemistry.

Refreshingly, she said she expected it and was confident when opening her results.

“My family was so happy,” she said. “They started crying. I’m going to Southampton to study medicine, I want to be a surgeon.

“My friends have all been crying as well. I’m going to throw the biggest party ever.”

Armend Ahmetaj was happy with his results, which mean he can go and study computer game programming at De Montfort University. He got a C in film studies, a D in classics and an E in chemistry.

His friend Lyudmil Popov was also happy after getting an A in art and two Cs in history and film studies. He’s off to study fine art at UAL.
