Glamorous golden girls and smart seniors can enjoy an afternoon of vibrant entertainment, music and dancing at a ‘Posh Club’ for older people starting this month.

The club, designed to give older people on a shoestring budget an afternoon of high living, will spring to life at St Paul’s Church Hall, in Stoke Newington Road, on January 21.

Founder and artist Simon Casson, 48, said: “I’m from Hackney. I grew up in Stoke Newington and my mum used to live here but like a lot of Cockneys she moved to Crawley.

“We decided to open a posh cabaret club for her there and it was a massive hit so we decided to open another one in Hackney.

“I think, for ordinary older people who don’t go clubbing or go out that much, maybe there aren’t specific things for them. Events might be too expensive, or they can’t get there. It might be dark; full of young people or too noisy but The Posh Club is specifically for people in their older years that may also be a bit vulnerable.”

He added: “It is an environment that is warm and supportive but also incredibly fancy; it’s going to be like the Ritz with a pianist and waiters in dickey-bows serving beautiful sandwiches, tea and scones.

“And then there is cabaret and champagne - all for £3.”

Mr Casson grew up in Stellman Close and said he was bringing the event would back to his roots after being contacted by St Paul’s vicar, Reverend Niall Weir.

Mr Casson said: “Niall is a fantastic vicar; he is really active in the community. He saw our club and invited us because he wanted an exciting, glamorous project for local older folk.

On the opening day he is going to do a song on the piano; he is a bit of ajazz man as well and he has a beautiful, like an Irish crooner.”

Supported by the Big Lottery Fund the event will be on for 10 weeks as a trial with the aim to go full time. The opening performance will include dancing flappers with a 1920s theme, a tap dancer and a hula hoop artist.

Other performers include classical musicians, big bands and Elvis tributes.

Mr Casson said: “There are lots of artists and performers living in Hackney and now they have somewhere to perform on Wednesday afternoon. Hackney has alwayds been a magent for creative people. We are asking them to do shows for our grandmothers and mothers

I think people want somewhere to wear their fancy clothes to and we want to bring that back.

“We have ordered lots of beautiful lights, a mirror ball and velvet curtains. Now we just need 80 dressed up to the nines people in their 70s, 80s and 90s.”
