Amnesty International has teamed up with Hackney based photography charity PhotoVoice to hunt for the best young human rights photographer in Britain.

The competition invites young people to take a photograph telling a human rights story and is part of Amnesty’s exciting new expanded Youth Awards for 9-21 year olds.

Alongside the photography category, now in its second year, Amnesty’s Youth Awards also aim to find the best young human rights reporter, songwriter, fundraiser and campaigner.

Matt Daw, Projects Manager at PhotoVoice, which is based in Leonard Street, said: “Human rights can seem like an intangible concept, yet a photograph that shows the reality of someone’s basic rights being denied is powerfully affecting.

“PhotoVoice exists because photography is a powerful tool for social change.

“The Youth Awards are invaluable as they encourage young people to explore the reality of human rights, and in doing so they gain an understanding of how they can contribute in a real way to the protection of those whose rights are being abused.”
