Scores of clowns gathered at Haggerston’s All Saint’s Church on Sunday, dressed in motley for a unique annual service dedicated to their art.
Rev Richenda Wheeler, who conducted the service, said: “To be able to laugh about the joys and the sorrows of life is something we all appreciate, and our prayer is that clowns everywhere may help us to do this in a Christian spirit.”
The tradition to commemorate the life of the great clown Joseph Grimaldi began in 1946 at the former St James’s parish church in Pentonville Road where he is buried.
