A crowdfunded project is hoping to put fresh fruit and veg back on the menu with a travelling shop.
Non-profit group East London Food Access, which runs three fruit and veg stalls across the borough, is behind the Freshwell Mobile. The idea is to set up a pod on wheels that can be taken around Hackney and beyond to areas that have less access to fresh produce.
The pod will offer fresh ingreients at a low rate, as well as featuring a cooking demonstration area where customers can learn how best to use the fruit and veg they purchase. Information areas will complete the project, allowing for people to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle.
“It’s important that everyone can buy and know how to get the most from fresh fruit and vegetables – especially the old and the young, and those on limiting incomes,” said Les Moore, managing director of East London Food Access.
“The project makes this possible for those who need it most.”
East London Food Access also hopes to revitalise some of the neglected space around social housing estates by educating people as to how best to utilise the areas.
In addition, local people and groups will be invited to set up their own stalls alongside the Freshwell Mobile, while the group’s delivery service will ensure that those who are housebound or have issues with mobility are not denied access.
The pod, which slides out the back of a dedicated project van, can be taken to any space and folded out to present three produce display units, a cooking bay with a small sink and food preparation area and an information display.
“Not everyone can access, afford, or know what fresh fruit and vegetables to buy or prepare,” continued Les.
“It’s important to us that everyone in Hackney enjoys good health – and fresh produce is key to that.”
Just under £45,000 is needed. The new Mayor of London has four pledges of £20,000 to give to food related projects across London, and the group is hoping to be one of the lucky projects chosen.
