Spurs were set to take on Aston Villa Ladies, but got stuck in standstill traffic on their way to the stadium

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies endured a frustrating night on Tuesday without a proper ball being kicked in anger.

Spurs were set to visit Aston Villa Ladies for a match in the FA Women’s Championship, but it had to be postponed.

Karen Hills’ team were on their way to Sutton Coldfield, but saw their journey up to Boldmere thwarted following an accident further ahead of them on the M1.

Despite setting off with lots of time to spare, a bad multi vehicle crash between J14-J15 near Milton Keynes saw the motorway closed.

Initially the kick-off time at Aston Villa was moved back to 8.15pm, but it was no use as the M1 didn’t properly open again until close to 8.30pm.

An official club statement read: “Due to an earlier incident on the M1, our away game with Aston Villa Ladies has unfortunately been postponed.

“Our apologies to any supporters who have made the journey. We will announce the rearranged date of this fixture in due course.”

Aston Villa Ladies also added: “Unfortunately, our opponents are still stuck on the M1 and will not make it to Boldmere before our 8.30pm cut-off.

“Meaning the referee has decided to postpone the match. All tickets purchased online will be valid for the rescheduled fixture.”

The encounter was called off at 7.15pm, but Spurs still had a long wait to get moving again and eventually home.

Hills’ team are set to have this weekend off now with their next scheduled fixture on Sunday, March 24 at home to Sheffield United Women.

It seems likely Tottenham will have to play the clash at Villa on another midweek due to the hosts’ FA Cup exploits.

This Sunday Aston Villa are set to host West Ham Women in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup while both clubs have a fixture in place for March 31.

Manchester United Women cut Spurs’ lead at the top of the Championship to just two points on Sunday.

The second-placed club put six past Leicester City Women in a 6-1 win and have 37 points compared to Tottenham’s tally of 39.

Spurs have played one game more than United, but host Casey Stoney’s side at the end of this month on March 31.
