Fundraisers heaved a 26 tonne boat along the Regents Canal through Hackney on Saturday (September 18) raising money for the charity Victim Support on its Great Narrowboat Challenge.

The two teams of eight people began pulling the 56 ft-long boat from Bow Wharf at 10am and reached the City Road basin in Islington three hours later.

The teams from health club Fitness First had to deftly manoeuvre the vessel around other moored boats and through three locks along the three-mile canal stretch.

Patrick Green, Victim Support’s London deputy locality director, said: “Last year Victim Support helped around 15,000 victims and witnesses of crime in East London so we know just how devastating it can be for them.

“Fundraising events like the Great Narrowboat Challenge are vital as they directly fund the help that victims need.”
