‘Be more ambitious tackling air pollution’ Hackney Council urges London Mayor Sadiq Khan

Hackney Council is calling on London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s to make his proposals to tackle air pollution more “ambitious”, and extend the zone where all vehicles must pay a daily charge to travel if they don’t meet exhaust emission standards.
A consultation is currently underway to extend the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from central London to the North/South Circular.
But Hackney Council is calling for a London-wide zone, pointing out some boroughs would be bisected by the boundary, and it could actually increase air pollution in areas outside it.
The council’s transport chief Cllr Feryal Demirci said: “Improving air quality is a priority for Hackney and we support the importance that the Mayor of London is giving to reducing air pollution.
“However, air pollution is a London wide problem which needs a London wide solution. We do not feel that a zone which stops at the North and South Circular, cutting through boroughs and town centres, is ambitious enough.”
