Bikes that were ruined in the Lea Bridge Road flooding have been donated to a charity that refurbishes them and gives them to homeless people.
The wheels were salvaged from the basement of a block of flats left underwater in October but Thames Water’s insurers wrote them off.
The original owners were all given cash for replacements while their old bikes were given to Bikeworks this week at their home, the Lee Valley VeloPark, the cycling venue for the 2012 Olympics.
Thames Water’s Salman Keceli said: “We’re working hard to be a more sustainable business by reducing waste so we were very happy to hand over the bikes.
“By donating them to Bikeworks we’re not only preventing them going to landfill but also supporting a good cause which serves the very community that was disrupted when our pipe burst last year.”
Jim Blakemore from Bikeworks added: “So many bikes end up in landfill sites but we can ensure they will either find new homes as complete bikes, or as parts.”
