Literature lovers will get the chance to hear from a Booker Prize winner in Stoke Newington next month.

The Stoke Newington Literary Festival will return for its seventh year with guests including Schindler’s Ark author Thomas Keneally and David Mitchell, writer of Cloud Atlas.

The former won the prestigious award in 1982 for the novel that would become Schindler’s List.

The weekender will be jam-packed with events, talks, exhibitions and children’s activities.

It is also joining in the 40th anniversary of the birth of punk. A Women in Punk talk will discuss the Hackney movement and how the influence of ska and reggae in the borough helped create a “natural successor” in the form of grime music.

Leading artist Andrew Logan will also appear with an exhibition celebrating his career as sculptor, artist and architect of the London club scene.

In a slightly more bizarre turn, former shadow chancellor Ed Balls will be taking part in a food event on June 5 at St Paul’s church.

Additionally, the festival will host feminism events, sport, a walking tour of Kurdish and Turkish bakeries, plus a kids’ programme based at William Patten School featuring The Gruffalo, Phoenix comic workshops and a Protest Camp in which kids will make their own banners about the changes they would like to see in the world.

The event was launched to celebrate the area’s literary history with Mary Wollstonecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and Daniel Defoe among the writers to make Stoke Newington their home.

It takes place from June 3 to June 5 at various venues across Stoke Newington.
