Continental Tyres Cup Group Two South: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 1 Brighton & Hove Albion Ladies 4

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies’ perfect start to Group Two South in the FA Women’s Super League Continental Tyres Cup was halted after Brighton & Hove Albion turned around a 1-0 deficit to record a 4-1 victory at Theobalds Lane on matchday three.

Danni Buet’s splitting pass picked out Sophie Perry rushing in on goal, forcing Sophie Mclean to hook clear for Spurs after eight minutes.

Mclean burst forward two minutes later for Coral-Jade Haines to gather and play Sarah Wiltshire through, whose angled strike was blocked by Perry.

Four minutes later, Ashleigh Neville on the left rolled across to Josie Green, who fired over the upright from distance.

The Lilywhites found the initiative on 15 minutes. A move starting with Renee Hector from the back culminated in Bianca Baptiste bursting through on the inside right who calmly slotted across Lucy Gillett.

The visitors equalised three minutes later when Perry’s curled ball got away from Toni-Anne Wayne for Lucy Somes to place in from close.

Aileen Whelan cut in off the left before Hector cleared off the line in the 21st minute, before Baptiste’s inside left attempted chip was stopped by Gillett four minutes on. Five minutes passed when Baptiste stepped up to send her free-kick over.

The Seagulls took the lead with 31 minutes played. Perry’s diagonal free-kick dropped to the far-post which Fern Whelan scrambled in.

Green and Mclean combined to slip Bianca out wide whose low, drilled cross for Wiltshire was stopped in its traps by Gillett three minutes later.

Green drifted from right to left on 39 minutes before striking wide of the left post and Haines’ recycle with Maya Vio finished with Baptiste striking inches over two minutes before the break.

11 minutes following the restart, Haines shimmied in the middle prior to picking out Wiltshire whose dipper towards the bottom corner was pushed round the post by Gillett.

Kirsty Barton picked out Fliss Gibbons at the other end, which saw Hector use her strength in the box to guide the danger clear with 69 minutes gone.

Lucia Leon’s by-line cross was inches away from Wendy Martin on 78 minutes. Five minutes before the end, Ini Umotong got on the end of Buet’s inside right free-kick to chest across into the bottom corner to double Brighton’s advantage.

And Umotong found her brace a minute into stoppage-time when she broke through on goal and placed a half-volley into the far corner.
