Dalston’s Arcola Theatre hosted the launch of a campaign to make Hackney an official sanctuary for people who have suffered from poverty, persecution and war.
Musicians Travelling Irons and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen were among those to perform on Saturday (March 12).
Supporters are calling for Hackney to be accredited as a Borough of Sanctuary, recognised as a place of safety.
Reverend Cathy Bird, who is one of the organisers, said: “For many years the borough has had a reputation as a place of refuge and hospitality for people from all over the world who have come seeking a place of safety. Recent cuts mean that many vital services for migrants are facing closure and the capacity of the borough to continue to be a place of welcome is seriously threatened.”
