People in Homerton are hoping to raise £7,500 in a crowdfunding campaign to fund a community gardener for a year.

More than £2,000 has already been raised in the 10x Greener campaign for someone who would work one day a week in the E5 postcode area to “transform the streets into a green haven”.

They would work in the area between Hackney Marshes and Chatsworth Road, and tend contributors’ front gardens as well as help maintain the flowers and herbs locals have already planted on the streets. Volunteers have also built habitat panels for bees, painted a sparrow hawk on the wall of one house and put up nest boxes for swifts and sparrows.

Daniel Raven Ellison who came up with the idea, said: “Greener streets can improve health, create biodiversity, cut air pollution and even provide free food.

If we can keep 10x Greener going here we can inspire neighbourhoods across London and the UK to make their streets greener too.” Donate at crowdfunder.co.uk/10xgreener.
