How far can you run in an hour? That’s the simple challenge being set by children’s charity the NSPCC, supported by this paper.

The 60 Minute Challenge offers a departure from the mould of set-distance running. Instead of running 5k, 10k or a half-marathon, runners can challenge themselves to see just how far they can journey in the time limit.

The event, that will see runners lap around the mile-long road cycling circuit at the Lee Valley Velopark on Sunday, October 4, is the first of its kind in the UK.

With our support as media partner, the NSPCC is calling on people to make it their “best hour” and keep children safe from cruelty and abuse.

NSPCC’s head of participation events, Victoria Kellaway, said taking part in the challenge “could help change a child’s life” enabling the charity to be there for children when needed.

She added: “This event isn’t about who is the best, it’s about being the best you can be. Everyone who enters will be taking on a personal challenge to run as far as they feel able during the 60 minutes.

“For some people that might mean running flat out for the whole hour and for others it could mean more of a gentle jog or even walking some of it.”

Each competitor will see the distance they cover accurately recorded by chip technology. They will receive a free athletics vest and training plan prior to taking part as well as a medal to mark their efforts at the end.

There are two waves available for runners to choose from, meaning all abilities are able to take part.

The first “run harder” wave will head out at 10am and is aimed at participants who want to blaze a trail during their 60 minute effort. It is not suitable for children under the age of 15.

The “run together” wave will head out at 11.30am and is aimed at participants who might want to walk, jog or stop and start along the way. Families with younger children are welcome to take part.

Entry into the event costs £20 per adult or £70 for a team of four. Anyone under 18 will pay just £5. All adult participants must pledge to raise £150 for the NSPCC.

The NSPCC is the only children’s charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK and relies on voluntary donations for more than 90 per cent of its funding.
