When Beth Powell nervously entered a summer camp for seriously ill children to volunteer for the first time in 2012, she couldn’t have imagined the impact it would have on her life.
Then 21, the Stoke Newington native had signed up to help out at Over the Wall to pass the time on a break from her zoology degree.
Now, she is set to volunteer on her eighth camp and has swapped her dreams of working in a zoo to study a second degree so she can become a doctor for the charity.
“I remember walking up the driveway my first time and thinking ‘what am I doing?’,” explains Beth. “Now I look at it as the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m looking forward to the day I can become part of the medical team.”
