Complaints to Hackney Council are at a four-year high, having spiked by 13 per cent in the past year.

Some 3,005 grievances were raised in 2016/17 compared with 2.649 in 2015/16 – the majority relating to housing repairs and cleaning (23pc).

Complaints about adult and children’s social care and housing needs have all shot up by 32pc – and with 23 more complaints than the previous year, those to libraries, heritage and culture have risen 79pc.

The rise in complaints against services that don’t normally generate high volumes “should be considered in context to the number of waste collections made or the number of visitors to libraries and parks”, the council says. Breaking figures down, 38pc of complainants had issues about a service failure, 6pc about case management and 6pc about staff behaviour, while 11pc disagreed with policy or a decision, and 10pc were angry about delays or missed appointments.
