A sex offender has been jailed for 20 years after he was found with indecent images of children when he was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Police found the images, along with extreme pornography, when they swooped on Steven Jeanne, 44, at his Hackney home after one of two rapes on separate victims was reported.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard during sentencing last week that the 44-year-old was first arrested in October 2012 after a woman said he raped her. It was during a subsequent search of his address in Brent House Road that the indecent images were uncovered.

In March this year, while on bail after being charged with both offences, the court was told he assaulted the same woman following an argument.

Further information about another rape of a different woman in Newham, which Jeanne committed in February 2011, came to light while he awaited trial for the two other offences.

The victim had made the allegation to police a year after the incident took place but there was not deemed to be sufficient evidence to prosecute at that time.

However, following the trial in July, Jeanne was found guilty of both rapes and one count of grievous bodily harm.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to 14 counts of possession of indecent images of children and pornography.

Jeanne was last week sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court to 15 years for both rapes and five years for grievous bodily harm. In addition he was given 14 years – to run concurrently – for the child abuse and pornography images.

Det Con Kath Watson, of the Sexual Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, based at Hackney, led the investigation.

She said: “Steven Jeanne’s offending was fuelled by alcohol, drugs and his obsession with extreme pornography.

“I am so grateful that they [the victims] trusted the police and were able to assist us in incarcerating a dangerous sexual predator.”

Det Insp Patrick Milford, who heads the Hackney team, said: “Steven Jeanne is a very dangerous sexual deviant. He preyed on vulnerable women, subjecting them to violent rapes.

“The victims have shown incredible courage throughout the investigative process and I would like to thank them for their support throughout this.”
