»A sex predator raped a vulnerable young woman in the back of a car after targeting her when she lost her boyfriend.

The victim, who was visiting London for the weekend, became separated from her partner at a Shoreditch nightclub and was struggling to find her way back to where she was staying when rapist Michael Wilson, 31, struck. He picked her up in a car in a street nearby with his friend Ahmed Quras, 27.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard that police pulled over the car which was being driven erratically in Cambridge Heath Road, Tower Hamlets, just before 2am on April 12.

Officers saw the woman in her 20s, who was unaware of her surroundings, naked in the back seat next to Quras, and Wilson in the front passenger seat half naked.

Police believed Quras, who was disqualified from driving at the time, had been behind the wheel at the time of the incident but had attempted to swap seats with Wilson to avoid being caught.

Both men were arrested. Wilson, of Grange Road, Plaistow, was subsequently charged with rape and was convicted of the crime on Tuesday following a trial.

Quras, Shrewsbury Road, Woodgrange Park, was charged with aiding and abetting rape but was cleared. He had earlier pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving while disqualified.

Both men have been remanded until sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on December 5.

Det Con Spencer White of the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command said: “I am very pleased with the outcome of this trial, particularly for the victim. She has shown immense courage throughout the case and during the trial.

“The defendants in this case clearly targeted her due to her vulnerability at the time and this outcome will help bring to an end a very difficult chapter in her life.”
