Officers donned riot gear and called in negotiators to handle a man throwing bricks off a roof near Pitfield Street at 8.25pm.

The drama unfurled over several hours, with locals amassing in the street below to watch.

The man sat on the roof of the building, shouting down at passers-by and throwing bricks at cars, for several hours.

He was finally hauled off in the back of a police van, as shown in the above photo, just after 11pm.

Police said that he was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, a racially aggravated offence, criminal damage, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The presence of the helicopters became a trending topic on Twitter as people in east London tried to find out why the #HoxtonHelicopter was making so much noise.

London Ambulance Service also attended the scene.
