A thug who took part in last summer's riots and threw stolen cans of drink at police officers in Hackney has been jailed for 20 months.

Danny Whittemore, 21, of Morris Blitz Court in Foulden Road, Stoke Newington pleaded guilty to violent disorder and two counts of burglary.

Whittemore was seen on CCTV breaking into the Tesco store in Morning Lane through a side door and re-emerging with stolen cans of drink, and was subsequently spotted throwing them at police officers in Mare Street.

He then went on to burgle the nearby Clarence Road Convenience Store.

A judge sentenced Whittemore to 20 months’ imprisonment for violent disorder and 12 months imprisonment for two counts of burglary to run concurrently, with a total sentence of 20 months.

DS David Cann of Operation Withern North East Hub said: “Over a year after last summer’s disorder we are as committed as ever to identifying and bringing to justice those responsible.

“I am pleased that a custodial sentence has been imposed, demonstrating the seriousness of the offence.”

At the end of August 2012 there had been 337 arrests for offences during last year’s disorder in Hackney.
