Police have pulled a dead body from the River Lea in Upper Clapton.

Officers were called to Riverside Close, near Millfields Park, at about 2.50pm after reports of a person in the water.

A man, believed to be in his 50s, was pulled out by a team of specialist and marine officers, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are looking into how he came to be in the water and how long he’d been in there. Scotland Yard say the death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

Officers are trying to establish the man’s identity and notify his next of kin.

A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course.

The area has been taped off while police investigate.
