A Dalston club that took the council to court for revoking its licence has lost its appeal after another incident involving a knife inside the venue.

Morna Jazz Lounge, off Gillett Square, was stripped of its licence in December after police called for a review over “wholly inadequate” security measures.

Officers said they had been called to the venue “numerous times” and had seen knives taken in and one man leave with a gun in his waistband.

Morna appealed the decision, and initially argued the town hall had “erred in fact and in law by failing to take into account evidence that no material of crime and disorder had occurred at the premises.”

But the nature of the appeal changed when licence holder Franklin Browne removed his son Antino as designated premises supervisor and replaced him with Christopher Valentine, a former head door supervisor.

The appeal then centred on improved security, but a knife was found in the club in August, after Mr Valentine had taken over and magistrates ruled it was “beyond redemption”.

Throwing out the appeal at the East London Magistrates’ Court last week, district judge Alison Rose said regarding the August incident: “It reflects poorly on the management of the premises that night and is a further serious incident to add to the history of incidents.”
