Matthew Adeleye Edun, 22, of Richmond Road, Dalston, pulled a gold chain from his victim’s neck on a Northern line train travelling from London Bridge to Stockwell last year.

A man who pulled a gold chain from a Tube passenger’s neck has been jailed for robbery.

The 41-year old victim noticed a group of around eight young people sitting down when he boarded a Northern Line train travelling from London Bridge to Stockwell on July 8 last year at around 7.30am.

During the journey Matthew Adeleye Edun, 22, of Richmond Road, Dalston, who was part of the group, stood behind the man and pulled his gold chain off from around his neck.

The victim tried to get the chain back from Edun, but was surrounded by the rest of the group and allegedly punched in the face by one of them.

Mr Edun put the chain in his pocket and the group left the train at Elephant and Castle.

CCTV was used to track Edun across the transport network and he was arrested at his college on November 8.

He was sentenced to 21 months in prison at Blackfriars Crown Court on Thursday April 25, after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to robbery.

Det Con Karen Sweeney, the investigating officer from British Transport Police which conducted the investigation, said: “This must have been a very frightening and intimidating experience for the victim.

“He was very upset to have his chain taken, which had huge sentimental value as it was a present from his wife 10 years ago.

“Incidents such as this are fortunately very rare on the London Underground network and the chances of becoming a victim are very slim, but when they do happen, BTP takes them very seriously and will do everything in our power to identify and prosecute those responsible.”
