A police officer who assaulted a man at a crime scene in Lower Clapton last year has been ordered to do 200 hours of community service.
Pc Kashif Mahmood, 29, was sentenced yesterday after being found guilty of assault by beating at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on February 9.
He had been investigated after a complaint by a man who suffered a cut to his head on May 5, 2017 at a police cordon at the junction of Almack Road and Powerscroft Road.
The victim repeatedly approached officers at the cordon, before being involved in an incident with Pc Mahmood.
The Met referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (now the Independent Office for Police Conduct – IOPC) and a decision was made to independently investigate the officer’s use of force.
Following the probe the IOPC a file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who charged the officer, who remains on restricted duties.
Misconduct proceedings will now take place.
