Hackney’s top cop has expressed disgust at the “mob mentality” that ripped through the borough on Monday night and has issued a statement to reassure residents there will be extra officers on the borough’s streets over the next few days.

“Every person who holds Hackney dear to their heart, will be sickened by the mob mentality that saw property including local businesses, damaged and looted,” said Steve Bending, Hackney’s Borough Commander.

“The strength of Hackney has always been the cohesiveness of its communities and it is times like this where that will prevail,” he added.

Several people were injured on Monday night, including six police officers and a 75 year old woman who suffered a fractured hip, when knocked down by a crowd.

There have been 52 arrests made in connection with events in Hackney, while 922 people have been arrested across the capital as a whole in connection with violence, disorder and looting – 401 of whom have been charged.

“Following the disorder in Hackney on Monday, there were a large number of officers on duty on Tuesday to provide security and reassurance to the local community, following the disorder over recent days,” said Bending in a statement.

“We will continue to have extra officers on the streets of Hackney over the coming days and your local Safer Neighbourhoods will be patrolling the area to offer further security and reassurance.

“We will tackle any further disorder whilst continuing to deal with normal policing across the borough and keeping our people and businesses safe.

“Officers from Hackney will be working closely with you to assess any impact of the London-wide disorder.

Bending asked for public support in bringing those responsible for looting, rioting and crime to justice.
