A man shot by police on the Clapton Park Estate in March is still in hospital and may never walk again, the Gazette understands.

The 21-year-old was hit after armed police descended on Mandeville Street on March 20. They had been called to an armed robbery of a vehicle in Hackney and found evidence linking it to a property in the Lower Clapton road.

Six officers fired 13 shots during what is thought to be a stand-off, and they later recovered another gun. It is not known how many times the man was hit but more than two months on he is still in hospital with what are thought to be life-changing injuries to his spine.

Police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating and a spokesman today told the Gazette today officers were still analysing body-worn footage and also awaiting results from forensic tests.

“The investigation is ongoing to piece together exactly what happened,” he added.
