A Dalston nightclub where a woman was shot in the early hours of New Year’s Day has been shut down by Hackney Council ahead of a review of its licence.

588 Club in Kingsland Road, formerly Visions Video Bar, had its premise licence stripped at an emergency sub-committee meeting on Friday as an “interim” measure, pending a full review hearing.

Police were called to the club at about 5am on New Year’s Day after a clubgoer in her 20s was shot in the leg. Scotland Yard says the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening and she is recovering in hospital. No-one has been arrested over the incident, which detectives are still investigating.

The Met’s licensing team in Hackney moved quickly to apply for a review of the venue’s licence, which will now take place at some point this month.

In a report ahead of the meeting, Supt Guy Hicks wrote: “On the morning of January 1 at approximately 4.50am a female was shot inside the venue with a handgun.”

As well as the shooting, Supt Hicks said the venue has “previously suffered high levels of violence with injury” and said “serious failings in security” were “giving rise to concern for future events”.

The committee, made up of licensing chair Cllr Emma Plouviez, crime chief Cllr Caroline Selman and Cllr Sam Pallis, said police had praised the good character of licensee Eddy Augustine, but that it had no choice but to take away the licence.

They said: “In making this decision the sub-committee took into consideration submissions from the police about the good character of the licensee and their history of taking their responsibilities seriously.

“However, given that there were a number of serious concerns raised about the security measures currently in place at the premises, it was felt to be both necessary and appropriate to suspend the premises licence whilst these concerns still remain, pending the full review.

“The licensee does have the right to have the interim steps re-considered however it is suggested that the licensee work closely with the police to ensure that the appropriate measures are addressed before any such request is made.”
