Police have arrested a man after two separate racist incidents on a bus.

Scotland Yard is appealing for witnesses to the two incidents involving Islamaphobic remarks in Haringey and Hackney, which happened just moments apart.

The first happened at 9.50am on November 23 when a woman was verbally abused on the 259 bus in Seven Sisters Road.

A spokesman for the Met said: “Passengers on the bus intervened after the man who had made Islamaphobic remarks to the woman advanced towards her raising his hand as though he was going to hit her.

‘The bus driver stopped the bus and ordered the man off.”

Police were called to another incident on the same road just minutes later when a 38-year-old man matching the same description allegedly spat at a woman after another racist rant.

He was arrested on suspicion of religiously and racially aggravated public order offences, and bailed until mid-January.

Any witnesses who haven’t already spoke to police can contact the community safety unit via 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org.
