Prosecutors are weighing up whether to charge two police officers with driving offences over the death of Lewis Johnson in a chase last year.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has finished its investigation into the death of the Holloway teenager in Clapton Common and handed over its findings to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Two officers driving police cars chasing Lewis and pillion passenger Louis Kyriacou had been placed under criminal investigation and handed gross misconduct notices by the IPCC.

The watchdog’s report was also passed to the Met, who will consider misconduct proceedings against the same two officers and three others who were also handed gross misconduct notices but not investigated for criminal offences.

Lewis, 18, was killed when his Vespa smashed into a van following a police chase in Clapton Common on February 9 last year.

The talented footballer and his pillion passenger Louis Kyriacou were being chased after a smash-and-grab robbery in Kingsland Road. Kyriacou, of Pentonville Road, Islington, was found with five phones on him and was jailed for 10 months in November after admitting stealing them.

An IPCC spokeswoman said: “We have passed our report to the Metropolitan Police Service to consider, and have also referred a file to the CPS to consider any criminal charges for potential driving offences in relation to two police drivers.

“It is the role of the CPS to decide whether there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to charge individuals.

“The final IPCC report will be published once all proceedings have concluded.”
