A man who wrecked dozens of cars in a one-night tyre-slashing spree has been jailed.

Huseiyn Seyfi, 29, carried out the damage in Stoke Newington on the night of November 15 last year.

Police were called to Darenth Road to reports of two men slashing tyres, who were seen leaving the scene in a car.

Detectives traced the car to Seyfi’s home in Atherton Road, Ilford, where he was arrested two days later on suspicion of racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage.

Seyfi later pleaded guilty to criminal damage. But he denied that it was racially or religiously motivated, and was cleared by a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court last week.

Volunteers from Jewish neighbourhood patrol group Shomrim, which helped police investigate, said that whilst 38 car owners provided statements, as many as 63 vehicles are believed to have had their tyres slashed.

Barry Bard, co-ordinator at Stamford Hill Shomrim said “This was a big incident in the community, with so many victims in a very close area, it caused great concern and worry to many residents in Stamford Hill..

“I would like to thank the police for their amazing work in bringing this offender to justice and more so for their ongoing support to the community.”

Det Con Simon Johnston, added: “Seyfi caused an extensive amount of damage to parked cars with 38 owners providing statements.

“The damage is believed to be in the region of £5,184, and he caused distress and upset amongst the victims. His actions have not gone unpunished.”

On Wednesday last week Seyfi was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment, fined £5,184 compensation and ordered to pay £250 prosecution costs.

Charges against another man who was arrested around the same time and charged with racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage were dropped.
