A Hackney Council investigation found Roy Barrett – who also lived at the property in Clissold Crescent, Stoke Newington - was renting out homes to tenants while the building failed to meet national fire safety standards.

Mr Barrett pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates Court on May 13 for failing to have a license at a house in multiple occupation (HMO) in Clissold Crescent.

He has since agreed to carry out alterations to the house and to apply for a license in accordance with the law.

Cllr Karen Alcock, cabinet member for private sector housing, said: “Hackney Council is committed to ensuring that all residents in the borough live in accommodation that is safe and meets standards, and we will not hesitate to pursue landlords that don’t comply with the law through the courts.”
