A free children's festival in Dalston spanning the two weekends of the half term school holiday will leave youngsters spoiled for choice, with art, cooking and music workshops as well as boat trips around the Kingsland Basin.

Taking place across two weekends of Saturday May 28 and June 4, Dalston Square will be transformed into a giant Play Street playground.

Other highlights include art, craft and cooking workshops at the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden with local artists and chefs, and a portrait-drawing workshop led by the Art Hoppers in Dalston Square, with a selection of portraits being reproduced on the windows of Dalston CLR James Library later in the year.

A children’s music workshop using sticks, chairs, djembe drums and improvised instruments to learn West African rhythm patterns will take place at the Vortex Jazz Club, and there will be traditional canal boat painting workshops and boat trips around Kingsland Basin.

There will also be a performance of Kirikou by the Hackney French Youth Theatre and a subtitled screening of the French film Kirikou et les Hommes et les Femmes at the Rio Cinema.

The Dalston Children’s Festival is a community-led event and has been organised by the Dalston Children’s Network (DCN), a collective of organisations in Dalston, and is supported by Hackney Council.
