A brass band playing a Beatles medley greeted visitors to the De Beauvoir Association’s 13th annual Party in the Park.
Families enjoyed an afternoon of free activities for children in De Beauvoir Square including face painting and a bouncy castle as well as a magician who did card tricks and challenged kids to noughts and crosses – after correctly predicting the outcome.
Meg Hillier MP joined the crowds and chatted to members of the safer neighbourhood team. Fire fighters gave lessons in handling a powerful hose and two police officers on horseback chatted about their work.
Samantha Selmes, chair of the De Beauvoir Association, said: “Everyone had a marvellous time - a wonderful example of a cohesive community event that’s loads of fun. None of it could happen without our army of local resident volunteers.”
Funds to pay for the events were raised by cake sales organised by the De Beauvoir Women’s Institute, sales of Pimms and an Aussie barbecue, as well as a tombola and raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses.
