The England international hands the club a timley boost by agreeing a deserved improved contract

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a new long-term contract with star attacker Dele Alli, which will keep him contracted to the club until 2024.

It is a welcome boost for Spurs after a difficult end to October which firstly saw the club held to a 2-2 draw by PSV on Wednesday, then confirm the new stadium will not open until 2019 and conclude with a 1-0 home loss to Manchester City on Monday.

Mauricio Pochettino will be delighted by this news, however, especially given the close bond he has with the former MK Dons youngster.

A statement on Spurs’ official website read: “We are delighted to announce that Dele Alli has signed a new contract with the club, which will run until 2024.

“The midfielder joined us as a teenager from boyhood club MK Dons in 2015 and immediately set about making an impact in the Premier League, being named PFA Young Player of the Year and earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year in each of his first two seasons with us.

“He’s scored some memorable goals to date, including that stand-out volley against Crystal Palace in January, 2016, which won him the 2015/16 Goal of the Season.

“Recently, he returned to his former home, Stadium MK, and captained the team in our victory over Watford in the League Cup, scoring a penalty in normal time and then hitting the winning spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out.

“In all, he’s scored 48 goals in 153 competitive appearances for us while, on the international stage, Dele has established himself as a regular player for England since making his debut in October, 2015.

“He has, to date, featured at two major tournaments – Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he memorably scored in a 2-0 win over Sweden to help the Three Lions reach the semi-finals.”

Alli is expected to earn a big salary increase from this new deal and the news provides supporters with some much-needed positivity after a frustrating week.

The 22-year-old made his comeback from a hamstring injury last night and impressed off the bench and should now feature in Wednesday’s fourth round League Cup tie at West Ham United.
