Diane Abbott is the only woman to appear in the top 20 list of the most influential people over 50 on networking site Twitter.

The MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington is the first female to appear at number 20 on the list compiled by media experts PeerIndex, which sees music mogul Simon Cowell, soccer star Gary Lineker and entrepreneur Lord Sugar in the top three

The next woman is Green party MP Caroline Lucas, at 23.

The former frontbencher who has over 61,000 Twitter followers said on the networking site last week she was “baffled” and “startled” by the inquest jury’s ruling that Mr Duggan’s killing was lawful.

The killing of the 29-year-old gangster in Tottenham in August 2011 sparked an outbreak of rioting and looting across the country, and police were on standby this week over fears further violence could erupt over the inquest verdict.
