The Met is appealing for present donations to give to children in care who might not otherwise receive any at Christmas.

There are still a few tags on the tree at Stoke Newington Police Station in Stoke Newington Road, which people can choose and then buy the gift requested.

Otherwise to give money to buy presents, people can donate online at www.met.police.uk/christmastree.

Met Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “Christmas is a time for giving and who more worthy of receiving that generosity, then children in care who can find this season difficult.

“We are grateful to all those who took part in last year’s campaign to spread some Christmas cheer and we hope to do the same this year.”

Last year 11,360 gifts were given to children across London.

The Commissioner was inspired to launch the appeal Londonwide in 2012 after seeing a similar concept in Sheffield 30 years ago.
