Children have been enjoying the fruits of their labour after winning a greenhouse in a national competition to encourage children to eat more healthily.
Hoxton Garden Primary School, in Ivy Street, Hoxton, officially opened its new greenhouse last week and already it is full of fruit and vegetables.
Pupils won the greenhouse in an art competition organised by the UK-Dutch campaign Fruit&Veg4Kids, which promotes a healthy lifestyle for young people.
Pupils created sculptures out of vegetables for the contest and won the top prize at the London Produce Show at the Grosvenor House Hotel last month for their edible creations.
Entrepreneur Oli Blanc, son of renowned chef Raymond Blanc, and masters from the City of London’s Worshipful Company of Gardeners, helped pupils cut the ribbon on the new greenhouse.
Headteacher Stephen O’Brien said: “It means the pupils can grow fruit and vegetables all year round.”
It is another win for a previously troubled school which received a “good” Ofsted inspection for the first time in eight years in February.
