Youth charity City Year expanded its links with Hackney schools as the new school term began, when 10 young people began a year’s service at Haggerston secondary school.
The charity which enlists 18-25 year olds to act as tutors, mentors and role models was already up and running in Shacklewell, Whitmore and Sebright Primary Schools.
But now its corps members will be helping out at the school in Weymouth Terrace which was formerly only for girls but has taken in boys for the last two years.
Haggerston School headteacher, Dr Jane Keeley said they were delighted to welcome City Year: “Even in a short space of time, corps members have supported transition for our new students in year 7, are running literacy and numeracy focussed competitions at lunch time alongside supporting homework, GCSE study club and EAL phonics groups at the end of the school day.
“Corps members model our ethos of developing creative, confident and capable young people and we are excited about seeing the impact on our students over the course of this year.”
