A Clapton primary school is launching a Christmas charity single which they hope will prove to be a cracker.
Millfields Community School in Hilsea Street hope to top the charts with its single C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S, which is part of UNICEF’s A Song for Syria Campaign.
A fifth of funds raised will go towards children in Syria and the remainder to redesign the school playground to incorporate orchards and a sports area. The cost of the playground is expected to be £250,000.
All of the school’s 620 children, aged between five and 11 years, took part in the recording of the song which was composed by local resident Jonathan Hart.
Chair of the Parent Staff Association (PSA) and project creator Clare Wooldridge, whose two children attend the school, said: “It’s clearly completely bonkers, but you never know.
“We’re not going to raise this money within this community alone...but if we can get people around Hackney, London and maybe even the world to buy the 99 pence downloads we hope we can make faster progress towards our target.
“Raising money for UNICEF is definitely an important part of the project. It’s just a community of people coming together and seeing if we can make this work.”
Roz Wilson, head of music, said: “The world doesn’t care if you record Jingle Bells, but we’ve got an original song donated by Hackney composer Jonathan Hart and we already know our kids and our parents love it. If it gets on the radio, it will sell.”
A music video of the song has already clocked up over 1000 views on YouTube.
The song will premiere at UNICEF’s UK Christmas concert at St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge on December 9. It is the second time in a row the school has been selected to perform.
n. C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S will be available through Amazon and iTunes for 99 pence and a CD can be bought from millfieldscommunityschool.kartel.uk.com for £3. from December 9. To view the video, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKUlmE-HdA0&feature=youtu.be
