Conductors holding taster singing workshop in Hackney to gauge interest for community choir

The session, which is aimed at teenagers aged between 14 and 19, will involve a singing and vocal technique workshop followed by a short informal open performance for family and friends.

In addition to performing material taught on the day, there will also be an opportunity for those taking part to showcase their talents by singing a pre-prepared solo.

Hackney-based conductor Hannah Brine, who also runs community choir Victoria Park Singers, said: “We are looking for young people who are passionate or curious about singing.

“Maybe you can already sing or maybe you have always wanted to try. You are welcome whether you are shy but willing or you think you’re the next Beyonce or Frank Ocean.”

Hannah, who also runs community choir the Victoria Park Singers, was named as one of five BBC Unsung Heroes for her work in East London last year.

“We will be learning a mixture of contemporary songs in two and three part harmony,” she added.

“I truly believe everyone can sing, and everyone can make a beautiful sound. Singing with others is fun and a great way to be creative, meet other people with shared goals and learn.

“I am very excited to meet young singers in the area and make some great music together.”

Hannah’s conducting partner, Patrick Barrett, has worked with the National Youth Choir and the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain.

“I am very excited to work with Hannah and the talented young people of Hackney to create exciting music in a fun, friendly and creative environment,” he said.

“I am keen to broaden our horizons both educationally and musically.”

Supported by creativity-centred charity Ingeenium, the workshops are open to all young people and no previous experience is necessary. Hannah and Patrick are hoping to launch the new community choir in January.
