Schoolgirls from Dalston joined Sadiq Khan to challenge gender inequality online this week.
Students from The Petchey Academy in Shacklewell Lane took part in the Wikipedia edit-athon at the Bloomberg offices.
As part of his gender equality campaign, #BehindEveryGreatCity, the mayor of London invited secondary school girls from across London to create a host of new Wikipedia pages about women. It comes after the website revealed 83 per cent of its biographies are about men and 85pc of page editors are too.
Petchey Academy student Chloe Mankumbani said: “I’m working on a page for Nan Herbert – she helped a lot of people nursing in Cuba. I thought she was really powerful. When I read about her I thought she was so good to people, but then she deserved more for what she accomplished. I think she died and nobody appreciated her enough. So I thought that I should highlight her.”
Mr Khan said: “It’s just not an accurate reflection of the achievements of women.”
